Volvo Car Group initiates world unique Swedish pilot project with self-driving cars on public roads

Remember those Weekly Reader magazines from our elementary school days? Every so often, they'd have a feature on the future, telling us everything from the kind of houses we'd live in, and the cars we'd drive. These cars, of course, were to be self-driving, meaning we wouldn't have to worry about it. While those days aren't here yet, Volvo has taken a huge step forward in making it possible.

In the automaker's home base of Sweden, they've launched a project that will see 100 self-driving Volvo vehicles on the road in conjunction with the Swedish Transport Agency and the City of Gothenburg. The goal is that by 2017, all 100 of these vehicles are in use, to help the Swedish government attain its goal of being a country with no traffic fatalities.

The project is called "Drive Me" and we're pretty confident it will be a success. After all, this is Volvo we're talking about. They've been leaders in automotive safety and innovation since the beginning, providing us with years of technological and practical firsts, all of which is evidenced in the new Volvo lineup here in our Metairie, LA showroom, serving the greater New Orleans area.

To learn more about the self-driving vehicles and the progress of the "Drive Me" project, keep up with the Bergeron Volvo blog, as we'll be sure to provide updates.

In the meantime, you can take a look at our safe and fun-to-drive Volvo vehicles here in our showroom during regular business hours. Our team would be happy to answer any questions you might have, and set up a test drive at your convenience.
